The following letter, signed by all but one of the Engineering Division faculty, was distributed to all faculty and administrators at the College and copies were sent to all members of the Board of Trustees. It went out on April 12, 2001.
"The Division IV faculty welcome Dean Balmer's Convergent Technology proposal as the culmination of the curricular development in which we have been engaged since 1994. We look forward to defining its details, including the areas on which to focus and the interdepartmental courses, research, and projects to develop. We believe strongly that until the direction and details of the Convergent Technology initiative have been worked out, it is premature to make decisions about the reallocation of faculty resources, including the intended termination of the civil engineering program and department. Such decisions are likely to be irreversible, and should only be made after an extremely careful assessment of their impact on the educational mission of Union College, and on the college itself."
